“I can confirm that we received a report for a breach of section 267a of the Criminal Code at the end of August. The case is still under investigation, but I can confirm that it is about the sharing of an incident of violence on social media,” police attorney Silje Gudmestad Jansen in the Southwestern Police District told the newspaper Stavanger Aftenblad.
Section 267a of the Criminal Code entered into force on June 1 last year. It states that people who share offensive or obviously private photos, films, or audio recordings of others can be punished with up to one year in prison.
So far, three people have been sentenced for breaching the section, while the uncle from Rogaland has now been charged with a similar offense.
According to Aftenbladet, the man filmed and shared a video showing his nephew being subjected to violence. The video was shared on Facebook, where it was reshared by others and was viewed by thousands before it was removed.
Police inspector Grete Winge says that they are happy about the change in the law but adds that she believes that there are still many people who do not know that sharing videos of violence is a criminal offense.
