Rekord-Thomsen on the doping fever: – Has worked a lot mentally
– I found out quite early on that there are many shot putters in Norway who have been caught for doping. So my goal has really been to show that you can throw far without taking doping, Marcus Thomsen tells NRK.

Last weekend he broke the 39-year-old Norwegian record in the shot put when he threw 21.23 meters during a competition in Sweden. The previous record was 21.22 meters from 1986, and belonged to Lars Arvid Nilsen.

Nilsen was caught using anabolic steroids in the United States the following year, and banned for life when he again violated doping regulations in 1992. In the 70s, 80s and 90s, a total of seven Norwegian shot putters were caught using doping.
– It took a long time before I understood that I could become good. In my mind, it was impossible for a long time to throw the shot put over 20 meters. Everyone who had managed it had been caught doping, Kjell Ove Hauge told NRK in 2016. He was caught and admitted to doping in 1998.

– I’ve gotten a lot of comments on Instagram and over the years that Norwegian shot putters have been caught for doping, you can’t throw 20 meters in Norway without taking doping. That has had quite an impact, also with the fact that I want to prove that you can throw far without doping. But it’s not nice to get such accusations and read such comments.

– In the beginning, when it started to come, it affected me quite a bit. But I’ve been working a lot mentally and reading a lot, so now it’s more in one ear and out the other, so you forget about it pretty quickly, explains Thomsen.

He is the only Norwegian shot putter to have registered a throw of over 20 meters without having a doping history. Now the athlete from Voss also holds the Norwegian record.

– Now I finally have confirmation, on paper, that I am Norway’s best shot putter of all time.
– There’s something about being the shot putter in Norway who has thrown the furthest of all time. And there’s a bit of a heavy cloud hanging over that record, so it was always important to work for it, says Thomsen’s new coach Paul André Solberg.

NEW COACH: Paul André Solberg.
– It’s a past that was as it was, and then we have to look forward. Today it looks very good, Solberg adds.

Thomsen came in ninth at the Paris Olympics, and has been Norway’s best shot putter for a number of years. He points to good training and the absence of injuries as the biggest reason why he finally broke the Norwegian record. In addition, he has once again changed coaches and environments.
– I’ve changed coaches three times now. The last time was to Paul Solberg. So the coaching relationship between me and him has worked out pretty well. I’ve also made the choice to move back to Oslo after living in Sweden for five years, and commuting for eight years. So it’s the choices I’ve made that have had a pretty positive impact, I would say, explains the shot putter.

– I have 21.23 now, but it was really a miss. I didn’t feel like I hit it properly, he reveals.
– How far can it be when you hit?
