The Lille Faroe Islands still have a small theoretical opportunity to reach the World Cup final in football as the decidedly smallest nation of all time.
With its 55,000 inhabitants, the Faroe Islands are located in the northern Atlantic Mid -Norway, Scotland and Iceland, and the archipelago is a self -controlled part of the Kingdom of Denmark.
They have so far shocked with their strong results in the ongoing World Cup qualification, where they most recently beat the Czech Republic 2-1 at home on Torsvøllur in the capital Torshavn last Sunday.
With their 12 points in seven games, they still have little hope of getting to the World Cup playoffs in the US, Canada and Mexico if everything goes their way.
-It’s almost unreal that a World Cup is not so far away, and we have more inside. The players were absolutely fantastic, said national team manager Eydvør Klakstein to the online newspaper Royni after the weekend’s achievement.
So far we talk about 3rd place in qualifying group L, where Croatia tops 16 points. The Faroe Islands can reach 15 points with away victory over the Croats in the last match on November 14, but it is rather questionable whether they pass the Czech Republic (13 points). (NTB)
