This year, flu season is poised to arrive earlier than usual, prompting health officials to urge the elderly and those in vulnerable groups to secure their vaccination appointments as soon as possible.
The Norwegian Institute of Public Health (FHI) emphasizes the urgency of vaccinating residents at the highest risk of severe illness. Marit Voltersvik, the head of infection control, is unequivocal in her recommendation.
“We must not underestimate the flu,” warns Voltersvik. “The flu vaccine is especially vital for everyone over the age of 65 and those in designated risk groups. For these individuals, the vaccine significantly reduces the likelihood of severe illness.”
Concerns About Delays
As of October 20, the infectious disease control office at Helsehuset in Solheimsviken began administering vaccines against both influenza and COVID-19. Initial reports indicate that vaccination rates for influenza are lagging behind those of last year at this same time, raising alarms for health authorities.
“With the FHI indicating that this year’s flu season may be tougher and arrives earlier, it’s crucial for those who fall within recommended age and risk categories to make their appointments without delay,” Voltersvik advises.
She has a straightforward message for anyone who has yet to arrange their vaccination.
“The current lower appointment numbers may suggest that many people have been hesitant. If you plan to get vaccinated, do so now,” Voltersvik stresses.

Can You Get Multiple Vaccines at Once?
While some vaccines can be administered simultaneously, others require a waiting period:
- The flu vaccine can be given at the same time as the COVID-19 vaccine and the pneumococcal vaccine. There is no longer a requirement for a seven-day interval between these vaccines.
- However, for nursing home residents, an interval of at least one week is necessary between receiving the flu and COVID-19 vaccines.
Cost of Vaccines
The flu vaccine is priced at NOK 301, while the COVID-19 vaccine costs NOK 110.
