Denmark could take a long step towards World Cup play after the victory against Belarus on Saturday. But the evening was a small setback for the Danes, who only managed 2-2 at home against the bottom team. Scotland lost away to Greece, and there is one point that separates the Danes and the Scots before Tuesday’s clash between the teams. The Danes took control from the start, and already after eleven minutes Mikkel Damsgaard sent the Danes into the lead at home in Parken. Belarus, who had zero points in the World Cup qualification, kept well away from what the Danes came up with, and after 61 minutes they equalised. Valeri Gromyko pulled away from two Danish defenders, before sending the ball beautifully into the far corner to make it 1-1. Just three minutes later, Belarus had turned the game around. Nikita Demchenko got the ball inside the penalty area and put the ball in behind Kasper Schmeichel. The Danes were heading for a real fade, but in the 79th minute Gustav Isaken appeared at the back of the field and knocked in 2-2, which was also the final score. Scotland could have taken over the group lead with a win away to Greece, but the Greeks wanted it differently, and won 3-2. Denmark and Scotland meet in the group final next Tuesday.
