As mayors of Levanger and Namsos, we wish to address the board of Helse Midt-Norge with an urgent plea: the immediate expansion of emergency departments at our local hospitals is not just important—it is essential.
The emergency departments are the lifeblood of our medical preparedness, vital in treating patients facing life-threatening situations. For the residents of our entire region, quick and effective medical attention can make the difference between life and death. Unfortunately, the current capacity and facilities fall short, inadequate to handle present demands and woefully unprepared for future challenges.
We find this situation urgent!
- Our growing population, particularly the rising number of elderly residents, is placing unprecedented strain on emergency services.
- Advancements in treatment methods and heightened safety standards necessitate modern facilities and equipment.
- In the face of accidents and crises, our emergency departments must be equipped to manage large volumes of patients efficiently.
Levanger and Namsos Hospitals stand as pillars of healthcare in Nord-Trøndelag. Delaying their development risks undermining our preparedness and extending wait times for critically ill patients—an outcome we must firmly reject.
Investing in development now also aligns with sound economic practice. By modernizing our emergency departments today, we will reduce the costs associated with inefficient operations, temporary fixes, and overwhelming pressure on staff. New construction means improved logistics, shorter patient transfers, and a diminished reliance on costly emergency measures. Procrastination will only escalate both the financial strain and the complexity of the project.
We urge the board of Helse Midt-Norge to prioritize this endeavor without delay. Investing in our emergency departments is far more than securing buildings; it is an investment in the safety, health, and lives of our entire community, paving the way for long-term financial return.
