It’s almost hard to believe, but Harald Solberg, managing director of Norsk Industri, expressed his disbelief to NRK regarding Donald Trump’s intention to impose punitive tariffs on Norway due to the country’s support for Greenland.
“Essentially, this represents a form of trade policy we have yet to witness, especially from a nation as pivotal as the United States—one of our closest allies,” Solberg remarked.
Trump has announced that a tariff of 10 percent will apply to all goods shipped to the United States starting February 1.
What implications might this have for the Norwegian economy?
“The primary concern is the significant uncertainty it introduces regarding global trade regulations. Tariffs like these often play out like a game, and we must wait to see how actual policies evolve,” Solberg explained.
“This unpredictability poses a significant challenge; planning for the long term in such a volatile trade environment has become increasingly difficult. For Norwegian export companies, navigating these headwinds will be particularly problematic,” he concluded.
