Norwegian Film “Affection Value” Earns Nine Historic Oscar Nominations

In an exciting turn of events for the Norwegian film industry, Joachim Trier’s “Affection Value” has made headlines by receiving an impressive nine Oscar nominations. This achievement has etched its name in the annals of Norwegian cinema, making it a landmark moment for the country’s film community.

The joyous news of the nominations elicited an emotional response from actress Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas. “It was shock, shock, shock,” she exclaimed, recalling the moment she learned of the nominations. “I called my sister, and when she started crying, I started crying too,” she shared with Aftenposten.

Renate Reinsve, who is nominated for Best Actress, echoed the sentiment of disbelief and delight. “It was really nice,” she said, reveling in the recognition that “Affection Value” has garnered. Screenwriter Eskil Vogt described the announcement as “electric,” adding to the palpable excitement surrounding the film’s success.

The nominations encompass a range of prestigious categories:

    • Best Picture
    • Best Director for Joachim Trier
    • Best Actress for Renate Reinsve
    • Best International Film
    • Best Film Clip
    • Best Original Screenplay
    • Best Supporting Actress nominations for Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas and Elle Fanning
    • Best Supporting Actor nomination for Stellan Skarsgård

Moreover, another Norwegian production, “Den stygge stesösteren,” has also garnered nomination in the Hair and Makeup category, underscoring a strong year for Norwegian filmmaking.

“This is a historic day,” remarked Kjersti Mo, director of the Norwegian Film Institute. “It marks an exceptional international breakthrough,” she added, highlighting the momentum of the Norwegian film scene.

    A Controversial Reaction

Not everyone is entirely convinced by the accolades. Bernhard Ellefsen, the culture editor for Morgenbladet, expressed his astonishment at the film’s recognition. His critical review, published last August, sparked considerable discussion, as he declared, “Affection Value is yet another reminder of how embarrassing it is that Joachim Trier is Norway’s leading cultural export.”

Despite maintaining his position, Ellefsen admitted to being surprised by the level of excitement surrounding the film. “I don’t think the film is good, but I also find it surprising that it has created so much buzz,” he remarked, suggesting that its appeal might lie in its exotic portrayal of Scandinavian culture.

    A Record-Breaking Achievement

This year’s nominations have generated a buzz in Norway, especially considering that no other Norwegian film has received more than two Oscar nominations in the past. That record was previously held by Trier himself for “World’s Worst Man” in 2022.

Espen Nordahl has joined the ranks of honored filmmakers with a nomination for Best Visual Effects for his work on “Sinners,” showcasing Norway’s burgeoning film talent and creativity.

Reflecting on the significance of these nominations, Reinsve emphasized the hard work and dedication that Trier has invested in his craft. “He has worked tirelessly to bring his vision to life,” she stated.

    A Historic Awards Season

“Affection Value” has already made waves in the awards circuit, securing nominations and accolades from various prestigious institutions. At the Golden Globes, the film garnered eight nominations and took home one award for Stellan Skarsgård as Best Supporting Actor. Moreover, at the European Film Awards, it triumphed, winning six out of eight nominated categories, including Best European Film—a record-setting feat for a Norwegian film. Additionally, the film clinched the Grand Prix at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, further cementing its place in cinematic history.

As the anticipation builds toward the Oscars, one thing is clear: “Affection Value” stands as a testament to the narrative and artistic strength of Norwegian cinema.
