Israel Bars Doctors Without Borders from Gaza Operations
In a significant move, Israel announced on Sunday that Doctors Without Borders (MSF) will be prohibited from operating in Gaza starting February 28. The decision stems from the organization’s refusal to furnish the Israeli authorities with a list of its local staff in the region.
On Friday, MSF firmly declared its intention not to comply with this demand, aligning itself with the stance taken by other humanitarian organizations in similar circumstances.
“The decision follows several months of unproductive dialogue with the Israeli authorities aimed at ensuring the safety of our employees,” MSF stated, emphasizing the organization’s commitment to its staff amid escalating tensions.
Though a ceasefire was declared back in October, the humanitarian situation in Gaza remains dire. Residents are grappling with severe shortages of food, healthcare, and adequate housing.
“In the midst of an ongoing disaster in Gaza, where violence against health workers persists, the Israeli authorities have placed humanitarian organizations in an untenable position,” MSF lamented. “We are being forced to choose between disclosing sensitive information about our personnel and interrupting critical health services.”
The implications of this decision underscore the continuing struggle to provide essential care in one of the world’s most challenging environments.
