In an increasingly digital world, the introduction of a digital power of attorney stands out as a prime example of how technology can simplify daily tasks. With over 71 million prescriptions collected annually, it is clear that transferring authorization processes online, particularly through pharmacies, is not just beneficial but essential. Minister for Digitalization and Administration Karianne Tung (Ap) expressed this need during a recent launch event, stating, “We encourage other pharmacies to adopt these digital solutions swiftly.”
This week, Minister Tung gathered in Oslo to unveil the digital power of attorney for prescription medications at Farmasiet, marking a significant milestone. The event also drew representatives from the Norwegian Health Network SF (NHN) and the advocacy group Pårørendealliansen.
Understanding the New Solution
The digital power of attorney is established through the Helsenorge.no platform. Users can log in, provide details about the designated person who will be granted this authority, and activate it. Once activated, that designated person can order prescription medications for another individual and have them conveniently delivered to their home.
“Digital authorization exemplifies how technological advancements can lead to improved solutions for everyday life,” said Elisabeth Haug, managing director of Farmasiet. “Our goal is to create tomorrow’s pharmacy, ensuring that pharmacy services become more accessible, safer, and easier to navigate in our digital lives.”
Farmasiet is leading the way as the first pharmacy to offer this fully digital ordering process for relatives, complete with home delivery and pharmacist supervision, mirroring the experience of a traditional pharmacy.
A New Era of Flexibility for Families
Historically, relatives have faced limitations when it came to ordering medication for their loved ones. Parents could not request prescriptions for children over 16, nor could individuals directly manage medications for their aging relatives using their own ID portal access. The introduction of digital authorization addresses these issues.
For Helsenorge, rolling out this solution swiftly was crucial to easing future pharmacy-related challenges. The collaboration with Farmasiet has been instrumental in bringing this vision to life.
“The demand for digital power of attorney has been evident for some time, and we are pleased to offer this service through Helsenorge,” said Bodil Rabben, divisional director at Norwegian Health Network. “We are eager to introduce solutions that enhance citizens’ everyday lives, and we applaud Farmasiet for their prompt implementation. We look forward to seeing other pharmacies joining us by 2026.”
