Norwegian Film Industry Faces Dire Straits, Warns Actress Pia Tjelta

While Norwegian films have been making impressive strides on the international stage, the domestic film industry, according to actress Pia Tjelta, is in a precarious situation. She emphasizes the urgent need for better support mechanisms and increased investment to revitalize this vital cultural sector.

Currently gracing the big screen in the feature film See Me, Tjelta voiced her concerns candidly: “It’s just really sad that the industry is on its back and bleeding,” she remarked during a recent conversation with NTB.

A troubling survey conducted earlier this year revealed that a staggering one in three professionals in the Norwegian film industry has left their jobs within the past twelve months. Equally alarming, 60 percent of respondents indicated they are contemplating following suit. This assessment, carried out by Menon Economics for the Norwegian Film Institute (NFI), starkly highlights the challenges faced by film workers.

In light of these findings, Tjelta’s call for systemic change resonates deeply within the film community. As discussions about the future of Norwegian cinema continue, the urgency for action becomes increasingly clear.
