Travelers and agencies will have plenty of new options when looking for accommodation in Akureyri and nearby in the near future. This spring, announcements have been made about two new hotels in Akureyri, with the third one close to being completed this year at Grenivík – just half an hour’s drive away from Akureyri. Increased availability of direct flights to North Iceland year-round, both scheduled and chartered, has increased the demand for hotel rooms as well as the increased number of visitors to Iceland in general.

New hotel at the Forest Lagoon

Travelers and agencies will have plenty of new options when looking for accommodation in Akureyri and nearby in the near future. This spring, announcements have been made about two new hotels in Akureyri, with the third one close to being completed this year at Grenivík – just half an hour’s drive away from Akureyri. Increased availability of direct flights to North Iceland year-round, both scheduled and chartered, has increased the demand for hotel rooms as well as the increased number of visitors to Iceland in general.

    Forest Lagoon

A brand new 120-room hotel is currently under construction next to the Forest Lagoon, just outside of Akureyri. The hotel will include a restaurant, a conference hall and, of course, a great connection to the Forest Lagoon, which has been very well received by locals and visitors in North Iceland. The hotel will open at the end of 2027, and the lagoon will be expanded to connect to the building.

Höfði Lodge – Viking Heli Skiing

In Grenivík, Höfði Lodge is being built by the owners of Viking Heliskiing. It will open in 2026.

The Lodge will be a 5500 square meter building offering 40 luxurious rooms, of which 4 are suites, as well as a restaurant, spa, and wellness facilities along with other facilities such as lounge areas, bar, meeting and conference rooms.

Special emphasis will be placed on recreational tourism and adventure that guests can enjoy, including heliskiing, ski touring, mountaineering, biking, snowmobiling, hiking, whale watching, horseback riding, and hunting and fly-fishing.

Höfði Lodge’s surroundings are fairy-tale-like. The Lodge is situated on a 50-metre-high cliff, offering spectacular scenery with unobstructed ocean views overlooking the mountains on Látraströnd and the Troll Peninsula.

    Hotel Akureyri extension

This summer, construction on an extension to Hotel Akureyri was completed. The total number of rooms is now 140, and the new building includes a new reception and cafe bar.

Hótel Skáld – Curio Collection by Hilton

The third one will be run by Bohemian Hotels ehf., under the international brand Curio by Hilton, and will be inspired by Icelandic poetry. It will be promptly named “Skáld” – the Icelandic word for a poet. Offering seventy rooms in the center of Akureyri, the hotel will boost the availability of accommodation in the capital of North Iceland. This will be the first Hilton hotel in Iceland outside of Reykjavík. As part of the Curio collection, the aim is to evoke a bespoke story through distinctive architecture and design, world-class food & beverage and curated experiences. The hotel will open in the summer of 2026.
