At least 29 nations have issued a stern warning: they will refuse to endorse a final declaration from this year’s climate summit unless it includes a commitment to phase out fossil fuels.
On Friday evening, the Brazilian leadership presented a new draft for the declaration. To the dismay of many, the document notably omitted any mention of fossil fuels, coal, oil, or gas.
Climate Minister Andreas Bjelland Eriksen confirmed to NRK that Norway is not among the countries that signed a letter demanding the inclusion of a clear roadmap in the final text.
“We have not endorsed the ultimatum,” Eriksen stated, emphasizing Norway’s perspective that the viability of securing such commitments from various nations is highly questionable.
