Greenhouse Gas Emissions Decline in Half of Norway’s Municipalities, New Data Reveals
In a promising development for Norway’s climate goals, the latest figures from the Norwegian Environment Agency indicate that greenhouse gas emissions have decreased in half of the country’s municipalities in 2024 compared to the previous year.
“This is a clear indication that we are heading in the right direction. Municipalities have a crucial role to play in our climate efforts,” said Climate and Environment Minister Andreas Bjelland Eriksen, who represents the Labour Party.
Notably, the most significant reductions in emissions have come from road traffic, with a marked decrease in greenhouse gas output from passenger vehicles across nearly all municipalities.
Conversely, the data reveals a troubling trend: emissions from agriculture, shipping, and aviation have risen in more than half of the municipalities since 2023. This increase underscores the ongoing challenges that remain in the fight against climate change.
