Liverpool knocked Barnsley out of the FA Cup 4-1, but it is Dominik Szoboszlai who will steal the headlines after the match at Anfield.
The Hungarian worked exemplary home to stop the opponent’s attack, but when he was going to roll the ball with his heel back to his own goalkeeper, it went completely wrong.
– Total head mist, exclaimed Viaplay commentator Eivind Bisgaard Sundet.
Szoboszlai chose to apologize after the match:
– Apologies to the whole team. I made it difficult for us. It was a simple mistake, I would say. This is what happens in football and we have to put it behind us, said the 25-year-old, according to the BBC.
He also received relatively harsh feedback from manager Arne Slot:
– I don’t think you should try something like this in a match in the FA Cup, the League Cup, a training match and not even on the training field. It was a strange choice and I have my opinion about it, but I prefer to keep it to myself and rather take it with Dominic, Slot told the press.
Adam Phillips – who previously had seven years in the Liverpool academy behind him – had the honor of rolling the ball into the goal, thus reducing the score to 1-2.
Early in the match, the same Szoboszlai slammed Liverpool into the lead with a whizzing long shot in the corner. Then Jeremie Frimpong doubled with a hard shot into the roof of the net.
Liverpool decided the match in a magnificent way in the 2nd half: Florian Wirtz spot-kicked in the corner after great preparation by Curtis Jones and Hugo Etikité. In overtime, the French set the final score at 4-1.
The Merseyside club face Brighton in the next round.
