    Saka oppsummert

18-year-old Summer McIntosh has set three world records in swimming at a Canadian championship. She is considered the new, big star of swimming and is being compared to Michael Phelps. McIntosh trains under renowned coach Fred Vergnoux and will soon switch to Bob Bowman, former coach of Phelps. She has tied Sweden’s Sarah Sjöström with three world records and is considered a leading figure in the sport going forward.

    – I am no longer the hunter. I am being hunted.

That’s what swimming phenomenon Summer McIntosh says in an interview with CBC after her record-breaking race last week.

The 18-year-old set a world record three times during a Canadian swimming meet, which served as a qualification for the World Swimming Championships.

    – The last five days have been wild. This has probably been the best mood of my career. It’s going to take a few days to process, says McIntosh.

Summer McIntosh set these three world records during the swimming event in Canada:

      400 meter freestyle: 3.54.18 400 meter medley: 4.23.65 200 meter medley: 2.05.70

PS! During the event, she also clocked the second fastest 200-meter butterfly of all time and the third fastest 800-meter freestyle of all time.

    – Milestone

Former Olympic participant Elin Austevoll, who has been a swimming expert for NRK and Discovery during five Olympics in the 2000s, is very impressed with McIntosh’s achievements.

    – She is absolutely fantastic. She is clearly the new, big swimming star on the women’s side, Austevoll tells NRK and continues:

    – We’ve obviously been watching her for a few years. She had a fantastic Olympics in Paris. But now she’s taking the step up and is indisputably the biggest star we have on the women’s side.

RECORD RACE: Summer McIntosh waves to the crowd after winning the Olympic gold medal in the 400-meter medley in Paris 2024.

The expert doesn’t think it’s easy to rank the three world records, but holds a close one in the 200-meter medley.

Hungarian Katinka Hosszú had it for ten years, before McIntosh beat him by 42 hundredths.

    – He’s the one who had stood the longest. It’s a milestone to take him. And of course he’s in the 400-meter medley. No one else is close to that. So both of the two medley records are in a class of their own, says Austevoll.

Being compared to a historical Olympian

Although McIntosh is still only 18 years old (she will turn 19 in August), she has already influenced the sport of swimming for several years.

In 2022 she became world champion for the first time, and at that time she had not even turned 16.

During the Olympics in Paris last summer, she won three gold medals at the age of 17.

Norway’s biggest swimming profile in recent years, Henrik Christiansen, also does not hold back on his praise for McIntosh, comparing her to a historic Olympian.

BEING PUT UP AGAINST SUPERSTARS: Michael Phelps has a total of 28 Olympic medals. During the 2008 Beijing Olympics, he won eight gold medals.

    – It’s a bit like Michael Phelps about it. It’s crazy, Christiansen tells NRK.

    – What do you put in it?

    – What do you put in it?

    – Michael Phelps has eight Olympic gold medals in one Olympics where he has five individual events where he is the best in the world. Having that kind of dominance reflects how good he actually is, says Christiansen.

IMPRESSED: Henrik Christiansen calls what McIntosh is doing “crazy”.

    Get a star trainer

This winter, McIntosh has been training under Frenchman Fred Vergnoux, to whom she gives much of the credit for her recent success. He has coaching experience from six Olympic Games.

    – I’ve coached a lot of swimmers, but I’ve never seen anyone like her. She’s unique. She’s very special, so focused and very professional, Vergnoux tells CBS.

When the World Cup is over at the beginning of August, she will still change coaches to Bob Bowman.

    BECOMING THE COACH: Bob Bowman.

He once coached former star swimmer Phelps. Currently, he is the coach of Léon Marchand, who became the Olympic king with four gold medals on home soil last summer.

    – It’s hard to predict. It could definitely be incredibly exciting, Christiansen answers when asked what he thinks the coaching change will mean for her development, and continues:

    – But the environment in Texas is incredibly strong, where there are an extremely large number of athletes who show that they are developing under Bob Bowman.

    Giving away the gold medals

McIntosh won all five events she competed in during the qualifying round in Victoria, in the far southwest of Canada.

In addition to the three world records, she also set Canadian records in the 800-meter freestyle and 200-meter butterfly.

NEW GOLD OPPORTUNITIES: Summer McIntosh will once again have the opportunity to secure precious metal at the World Swimming Championships that start in Singapore in just over a month.

All five of her gold medals were given to young children in the stands. She says it’s “ten times better to see the reactions of the girls and boys than to have them in a keepsake box.”

    – She deserves all the praise. We have a superstar. We have news stories across Canada and national broadcasts that are repeated every hour. This is groundbreaking for the sport, says John Atkinson, chief executive of the Canadian Swimming Federation.

After her achievements this month, she has also taken the step to the top of the world record throne with Swedish legend Sarah Sjöström. Both currently hold three world records each in long-course swimming.

    – Sarah also started breaking records and world championships when she was very young. I think that says we have many good and exciting years ahead of us with Summer McIntosh, says Austevoll.

The next exciting moment will be how many golds McIntosh takes at the World Swimming Championships in Singapore between July 27 and August 3.
