This Weekend: Jazz, Ice Fishing, and Cryptography—Though Not All in Oppegård

As the winter holidays envelop old Oppegård, the spotlight is set to shift to major cultural events just around the corner. Next week, we can look forward to a performance by underground sensation Jon Ranes at Kolben. For now, however, we’ve uncovered three captivating events—one local and two that require a bit of travel, each with a distinct flair.

    Jazz at China House

This Saturday at 2 p.m., the Søndre Oslo Jazz Club invites you to soak in the sounds of Saturday jazz at China House Kolben. The vibrant ensemble, featuring Ingrid Thomassen and Soul XL, will take the stage to deliver soulful renditions of cherished classics from icons such as Willie Dixon, BB King, Muddy Waters, Marvin Gaye, Al Green, Otis Redding, and Ray Charles.

Here’s the talented crew that will be bringing the music to life:

    • Ingrid Thomassen – vocals

    • Arild Sandberg – vocals and guitar

    • Roger Jacobsen – bass

    • André Banini – drums

Expect a repertoire steeped in the rich traditions of soul and blues, all delivered through the band’s unique lens. For more details about the event, click here.

    Ice Fishing Competition

If you’re willing to venture a bit farther afield, head to Breivoll in the heart of Bunnefjorden, where the Napp Sportsfishing Club will host an ice fishing competition this Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

This species competition focuses on catching a variety of fish and the biggest specimens. Registration is online, and good news—the entry fee is refundable in case of cancellation. Note that the event has been granted special permission by the Directorate of Fisheries, but please be aware of ice safety.

Participants should gather at the Breivoll car park, where prize distribution will take place around 3:30 p.m. The registration deadline is today, so don’t miss your chance to sign up. You can register here and find further information here.

It’s also noteworthy that DNT in Breivoll is hosting a range of family-friendly activities throughout the winter holidays, including:

    – Akemats for sledding

    – Ski slopes at the farm

    – A winter-themed nature trail

    – Board games for indoor fun

There’s no need to register—just come on by! Read more about what’s happening at Breivoll here.
